Chapter Fifteen

Donovan Ranch. Elgin.

“Two babies for breakfast,” said Farrell. “We need another highchair. Start a list, Ellis.”

“I have one on the go already.” She laughed.

“Another round of shopping coming up,” I said.

I poured myself a coffee and held Simka on my knee while Ellis fed her a small bowl of cereal. She opened her mouth like a baby bird for the spoon.

“Easy to see Simka is close to fuckin starvation,” said Farrell.

“Don’t give her too much at a time, Ellis. Feed her a small amount every couple of hours or she’ll end up vomiting it all up.”

“How do you know this, Tommy?” asked Ellis.

“My daddy was a sex trafficker before he got caught and Farrell killed him in our trailer. We used to get girls from south of the border that had been starved and that’s the way me and my brothers had to feed them. Just say’n.”

“True dat,” said Farrell. “Little bit at a time.”

“You had a challenging childhood, Tommy.”

“Never had one at all. I jacked my first car at twelve and drove it to the chop shop.”

“Is that why you decided to become a cop?”

“Didn’t decide. Farrell decided for me.”

She smiled. “I understand.”

My cell rang and it was the modular home people calling from Round Rock.

“Marshal Donovan.”

“Your house is on the truck for delivery today, Marshal. Can you be at your property around ten?”

“For sure, I’ll be there. Thanks for the call.”

“Who’s that?” asked Farrell.

“They’re delivering our house today. Got to meet the truck at ten.”

“Wow,” said Ellis. “This is going to be an exciting day. New baby and a new house.”

I laughed. “Parts of a new house.”

“If you’re going to be tied up in Butler, I can take Ellis shopping on my break at noon.”

“Or we can all go when you get off work and I’ll buy us dinner at the mall. A family outing.”

Farrell grinned. “I’m up for it.”

Private Residence. White House. D.C.

Lee woke early feeling excited Yvonne was starting her new position at the White House. Before his shower he checked his phone for messages and there were several from Tommy. All pictures of the baby girl he called Simka.

He scrolled through them twice and tears burned behind his eyes he was so emotionally moved by her little face and by the innate compassion Tommy had buried deep inside him.

At the breakfast table he read the Post and took note of any stories he might refer to Yvonne at their morning briefing. Having her with him throughout the day would be far different that having Carter darting in and out of the Oval Office delivering crisis after crisis. The Chief of Staff had his own workload and little time to take on any extras.

Lee congratulated himself on making the right move for a change. Creating this new position and bringing Yvonne on board was the best possible solution.

Looking forward to the future when Blaine Dunnett retired, Yvonne would not be lost to them, but in the fold and ready to take over the NSA.

It will all work out perfectly.
